  • Graduate Intern: These counselors are currently enrolled in graduate school. They have completed much of their academic requirements and are gaining the required hours of internship. Interns are a great option if you are looking for a solution focused, brief therapy option. They are also often a reduced rate and will not file with insurance.

Candidate: In the state of Oklahoma, Candidates have completed graduate school and passed the national boards to be able to practice counseling under the supervision of a state-approved licensed supervisor. Depending on the licensure, they are required to complete up to 3,000 hours of counseling before the state will issue a license. Candidates are often not able to file insurance because they have not yet been issued a license number. They complete their hours offering a reduced rate compared to licensed counselors.

If you have an insurance that a licensed counselor is not in-network with, it will be your responsibility to pay the full fee, but we will be happy to assist you in being reimbursed by your insurance company for at least a portion of the fee.

It is the client’s responsibility to understand their insurance coverage, including deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and any limitations on mental health services. While we will submit claims to your insurance company when applicable, we cannot guarantee coverage or payment. Client balances are not billed until we have received the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurance company, which determines the amount you are responsible for.

Our Candidates are able to provide services under supervisory billing for Aetna and most Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plans. Please note that we are not able to provide superbills for reimbursement through any other insurance providers at this time. Fees for services provided by Candidates will be based on the contracted rates established by the Candidate's supervisor's agreement with the insurance company.

Graduate interns are not able to file claims or present the client with a superbill.

You should know that filing any kind of claim with your insurance company requires a diagnosis of a mental health disorder. You may not want this on your medical record, as the diagnosis may have to be used when applying for some jobs, for life and disability insurance, and possibly in legal matters.

If you have concerns about privacy or the implications of receiving a diagnosis, we encourage you to speak with us about self-pay options.

  • Starting counseling can feel both hopeful and a little uncertain. The first session is designed to help you get comfortable, ask questions, and begin sharing what brings you to therapy.

During this initial 55-minute appointment, your counselor will spend time getting to know you and understanding what has led you here. You may be asked about your current concerns, personal history, relationships, and goals for counseling. This conversation helps your counselor develop a clearer picture of your experiences and determine how best to support you moving forward.

The first session is also an opportunity for you to get a sense of your counselor’s approach and ask any questions you may have about the counseling process. Together, you and your counselor will begin identifying goals and discussing what future sessions might look like.

    For Minors and Adolescents

When working with minors, the first session typically begins with some at the start of this first session time with both the parent/guardian and the young person. Parents may be asked to share their observations, concerns, and hopes for counseling, while the counselor also creates space to hear directly from the child or teen.

Our goal is to help young clients feel safe, respected, and comfortable expressing themselves. The counselor will explain confidentiality in age-appropriate ways and discuss how parents and counselors work together to support the child’s wellbeing.

    For Children Under Age 10

For children under 10, we may request an initial parent-only session before meeting with the child. This allows parents or guardians to share detailed information about the child’s development, behavior, and family context without the child present. It also gives the counselor time to understand the concerns and prepare for a developmentally appropriate first meeting with the child.
